DO YOU SELL REGISTRATION NUMBERS OR PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATES?
We do not sell registration numbers. We only manufacturer number plates, we do not offer cherished or personalised number plates. You must own or have entitlement to the registration number for which you are having plates made up.
**Important** You cannot simply make up a registration number and use it on the UK highway. Either yourself or the person you’re buying for must already own the registration number you will use. We do NOT sell registration numbers; we simply make replacement number plates for registration numbers you already own.
When you enter your registration number on our builder it will appear exactly as you type it so we advise you to carefully check the spacing as we can offer no refunds or reprints due to typing/design errors on your behalf, a warning pop up automatically appears if you don’t add a space to your registration and you have to click / tick the accept box to progress beyond this point.
WHAT PLATES DO YOU SELL?
WHAT IS A SHOW PLATE?
Show plates are number plates used for show purposes (for example motor shows, classic car events, weddings and photo shoots) and do not necessarily comply with the laws and regulations that govern number plates for road use.
CAN YOU MAKE PLATES WITH CUSTOM SPACING?
Yes absolutely, just keep in mind that this is for off-road / display purposes only and the responsibility is with you. Please feel free to get in touch and email email@example.com to advise us of the spacing requirements.
CAN I SUPPLY MY OWN IMAGE OR DESIGN?
If you don’t see a badge or background image in our plate builder then we will be more than happy for you to send us your own design or image. Please email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. The image must be of quality/high-resolution.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO CANCEL OR AMEND MY ORDER?
The plates are made to order and handmade to your exact specifications. In order for us to ship your item as quickly as possible it may not always be possible to cancel or amend an order which has been manufactured. Please take care to send us the correct details before placing your order. Any changes made after an hour of placing your order can not be accepted.
WILL THE PLATES LOOK EXACTLY AS THEY APPEAR ON THE PLATE BUILDER?
The plate builder is a digitally generated image to give you a general idea of how your plates will look once manufactured. The actual plates will give you a sharper image and be in the correct format.
ARE 3D PLATES LEGAL FOR ROAD USE?
In the UK they are valid until 1 September 2021. After that date road legal number plates must comply with BS AU 145e which prohibits two-tone / 3D effect fonts of any kind. This is for the benefit of ANPR cameras. However, show plates can sill be produced for UK customers using 3D effects as they are not intended for road use.

HOW DO I FIT MY NUMBER PLATES?
Our number plates are not supplied with pre-drilled holes. You can either drill holes to fit your vehicle and then screw or bolt on the plates or attach them using adhesive pads. Both choices have their merits and you shouldn’t be afraid to use the adhesive pads as they are increasingly the choice of major car brands. Our fixing kit makes the process easy whichever way you chose to go.
Please see our video guide for practical assistance.
HOW DO FLAGS ON NUMBER PLATES WORK?
National Flags on number plates
Many of us are proud of our national flag and want to display it on our cars. If you want to display a flag on your number plate in the UK you may do so but there are limitations if the plate is to be legal. You can display the following flags to the left hand side of a number plate so long as they are no more than 50mm wide:
- Union flag
- Cross of St George
- Cross of St Andrew/ the Saltire
- Red dragon of Wales
In addition you can have national identifiers as follows:
- Great Britain, Great Britain or GB
- UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
- ENGLAND, England, ENG or Eng
- SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
- CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or CYM
- WALES or Wales
Even if you have a national flag displayed on your number plate the EU still requires you to use a GB sticker when travelling in Europe.
Auto Plates Direct can provide show plates which include these flags from our plate builder but as they are show plates we can include any other flag (e.g. Cornish, Yorkshire, Isle of Man etc.) that you want.
What are the Legally required details on the slogan?
The legal details are a legal requirement for all number plates in the UK, and display the makers name, postcode and the British Standard. For this reason the legal details are a default option on LEGAL STYLE, but you can deselect the Legal Details and nothing will be printed to your number plates if so required by choosing SHOW PLATE, This also gives you the option to add your own slogan onto the SHOW PLATES, As always Show Plates are used at your own risk on UK roads, The legal details are printed in small text at the bottom & right hand corner in the smallest black font size available.
Spacing of registration number?
For the correct format you should only add one space to your registration. The space should be in the correct location, please refer you your V5 log book and existing number plates, When you choose LEGAL STYLE the builder will automatically space your registration in the correct Legal format, If you are still unsure please contact us for more information.
If you choose SHOW PLATE you are free to space your registration how you wish, But SHOW PLATES do NOT include BS number and Legal details.
The European Flag on a UK number plate
Up until 1 January 2021 it was possible to display the European symbol together with a GB national identifier on a UK number plate. Having this style of number plate meant that you did not need to put a separate GB sticker on your car when travelling within the EU. Since the UK is no longer part of the EU, the general rule is that such plates are no longer lawful and a GB sticker is required.
The EU has agreed one exception: you do not need a GB sticker if your number plate includes the GB identifier on its own or with the Union flag. You will need to display a GB sicker if your plate has any other flag – even a European Union flag!
